Another Sad Announcement

Posted on 1/17/2017 at 8:44:59 PM

Sweet Leah With a heavy heart, I need to let you all know that Leah passed away on the 7th of January. Her health had been failing for several months, but she hung on until after she reached her 17th birthday at the start December, and then remained stoically at my side through the holiday season.

She passed at home in my arms in the wee hours of the morning, a stark contrast to how we recently lost Toby, in distress, at the vet’s office. Neither loss was easy. Neither without regrets.

I will cherish every moment of the 13+ years I was lucky enough to spend with my Leah. I hope she is somewhere peaceful, running and feeling like a young dog again, as her presence here is greatly missed.

So sorry for your losses. It doesn’t ever get easy. I amazed that Leah was 17. Typically it doesn’t seem like bigger dogs live that long. I just made the statement recently that dogs should live longer. To me our pets are the purest living things. I lost my mixed breed three years ago at 14 and I cannot bring myself to get another dog. As he was my favorite out of many dogs over thirty-five years. I will get another dog when the time is right.

    Best wishes,

    Hi Jean,

Thanks so much for reaching out to me. Yes, Leah amazed me with her age…although it still wasn’t long enough! As she got on in years, every time a vet issue cropped up, I imagined the worst. But she was just a healthy, amazing, long-lived dog, who continuously surprised me. I do also think that being a mixed breed allowed her to live so long.

As for your own mixed breed, I’m so so sorry that you lost your heart-dog. Sometimes they take so much of us with them when they go, that is impossible to imagine sharing your love with any other.
